February 13, 1949: A Valentine to Brownie, the aging canine patriarch of Daytona Dogdom

On the day before Valentine’s Day, Fred Langworthy, wrote a Valentine to Brownie and to the people of Daytona Beach. “Stories about Brownie will be told in Daytona Beach long after the beloved Community Pet has gone to that Happy Hunting Ground where all dogs find their eternal rest.” Notes: Lots of stories showing how… Continue reading February 13, 1949: A Valentine to Brownie, the aging canine patriarch of Daytona Dogdom

December 27, 1951: A Christmas poem – and a dollar – is left for Brownie

“There is something mighty wholesome about a City whose people can pause in their busy Christmas season to remember an old and beloved dog, I always say.” Notes: Fred Langworthy, who often wrote about Brownie for the Daytona Beach News-Journal, had a sports column that often featured Brownie (I’m not really sure why). This is… Continue reading December 27, 1951: A Christmas poem – and a dollar – is left for Brownie

January 4, 1956: “A Good Dog” marker is laid on Brownie’s grave

Notes: Brownie died on October 31, 1954. The grave marker was put on his grave on January 4, 1956. That’s about 14 months that the city commission and Daytona Beach citizens talked about how to memorialize Brownie. By this point, the “new” Brownie, at the Post Office had been living there for about a year.… Continue reading January 4, 1956: “A Good Dog” marker is laid on Brownie’s grave

May 11, 1952: Brownie has heart worms again and needs more funds!

Notes: Heart worms were not treated as often in the 1950s as they are today, but Brownie was treated a few times. This particular treatment was a series of 14 shots and was rapidly draining his bank account. This article claims he’s 14 in 1952, so it’s getting clear that every reporter is guessing at… Continue reading May 11, 1952: Brownie has heart worms again and needs more funds!

June 1955: A Birdbath Instead Of A Grave Stone?

I’m not sure of the date of this editorial by Deborah D. Taylor of Baltimore, MD. It’s obviously 1955, but the date isn’t clear from the handwriting on this article. Most of the artifacts in the Halifax Historical Society are in folders and with handwriting on them that is not always clear. But I am… Continue reading June 1955: A Birdbath Instead Of A Grave Stone?

November 2, 1954: Many A Dampened Eye As Brownie Is Buried in Riverfront Park

On November 2, 1954, the Daytona Beach News Journal ran a large article and photos about Brownie’s funeral in Riverfront Park. I will post the photo spread in a separate post, but this is the article that ran under those funeral photos. Notes: It appears that Brownie was driven to his burial spot in a… Continue reading November 2, 1954: Many A Dampened Eye As Brownie Is Buried in Riverfront Park

August 11, 1953: Brownie Feeling Mighty Low; Hospitalized With Bronchitis

Brownie the Town Dog of Daytona Beach got bronchitis and of course it made the papers. See my notes after the article below. Notes: Can a dog get bronchitis? It turns out that yes, they can. Brownie had heart worms “three or four times”, which weakened his heart. Treatment options were not that advanced in… Continue reading August 11, 1953: Brownie Feeling Mighty Low; Hospitalized With Bronchitis

October 5, 1954: Brownie’s Sick, But Pals Plan For His Future

This update on Brownie appeared in the Daytona Beach News Journal in early October 1954. At the time, there was a plan to move Brownie from the busy corner at Beach and Orange to inside a pen in Riverfront Park. This was to protect him from getting hit by cars now that he was quite… Continue reading October 5, 1954: Brownie’s Sick, But Pals Plan For His Future

August 19, 1953: Brownie in hospital again due to Bronchitis, funds are very low

In August of 1953, Brownie returned to the Rawls Animal Hospital due to an attack of bronchitis. Items to note: In this article, Anne White (the author) estimates his age at 19. I could find not information for this Anne White via Google. Out of the two get well cards Brownie received, one is from… Continue reading August 19, 1953: Brownie in hospital again due to Bronchitis, funds are very low

November 1, 1954: Brownie’s Obituary appears in Daytona Beach News-Journal.

On October 31, 1954 after a long illness, Brownie the Town Dog of Daytona Beach died. The next day his obituary appeared in the Daytona Beach News Journal. The headline: Brownie Dies; He’ll Be Buried In Park. This obituary is by far my favorite of the many articles written about Brownie. Although I suspect many… Continue reading November 1, 1954: Brownie’s Obituary appears in Daytona Beach News-Journal.
