January 6, 1955: All Florida Magazine publishes “Brownie doesn’t live here anymore”

“Wherever it is that good dogs go, Brownie has already gone.” Final words of Mayor Jack Tamm’s eulogy to Brownie All Florida Magazine, a publication that I can’t find anything about, ran this story on January 6, 1955 about Brownie’s death and funeral. Notes This was a clearly emotional piece for the writer. The descriptions… Continue reading January 6, 1955: All Florida Magazine publishes “Brownie doesn’t live here anymore”

May 4, 1994: The Associated Press picks up the story of Brownie’s grave rediscovery

In my previous post, I shared an article from the Orlando Sentinel that still comes up in web searches on Brownie. Here is another that covers the rediscovery of Brownie’s grave in 1994. This one is from the Florida Times Union, which is Jacksonville’s newspaper, and it appears to be the actual Associated Press article… Continue reading May 4, 1994: The Associated Press picks up the story of Brownie’s grave rediscovery

May 3, 1994: After being buried under sod for years, Brownie’s grave is rediscovered.

This article appeared in the Orlando Sentinel and was written by Cory Jo Lancaster. The article was a publicity piece for a “Springtime in the Park” event that the Old Daytona Civic Association was organizing. While fixing Riverfront Park up for this event, they somehow rediscovered Brownie’s grave and used it to get publicity. It… Continue reading May 3, 1994: After being buried under sod for years, Brownie’s grave is rediscovered.

The First Annual Daytona Beach Dog Film Festival is December 17 at Cinematique!

A few months ago, Brownie’s Dog Boutique suggested to Cinematique Of Daytona Beach’s board that we should put on an annual film festival featuring dog films where you can bring your dog to the movies. We had envisioned this festival honoring Brownie the Town Dog of Daytona Beach and we wanted it called BrownieFest. Well, Cinematique… Continue reading The First Annual Daytona Beach Dog Film Festival is December 17 at Cinematique!

June 24, 1995: Brownie is included in a map of historical treasures found in downtown Daytona Beach’s Riverfront Park

A customer at Brownie’s Dog Boutique and I were chatting about Brownie the Town Dog of Daytona Beach and she mentioned an old article from the 1980s that listed all the historical treasures of downtown Daytona Beach’s Riverfront Park – the park where Brownie the Town Dog of Daytona Beach was laid to rest. As she… Continue reading June 24, 1995: Brownie is included in a map of historical treasures found in downtown Daytona Beach’s Riverfront Park

Photo: Brownie sitting with the tourist in the 1950s

This photo is displayed on many internet sites and I think is the best photo of Brownie. It shows him in 1950s Daytona Beach doing what he loved to do: be with people. This is the colorized version. Notes: The Daytona Cab Company cabs of the 40s and 50s were so different from cars of… Continue reading Photo: Brownie sitting with the tourist in the 1950s

A few ghost stories: Brownie died on Halloween

With Halloween coming up, I thought I would share a few “scary” Brownie stories that I recently posted on the popular website Haunted Places. Story 1. As you may or may not know, Brownie died on Halloween 1954. That’s kinda scary in itself! Boo! Story 2. A few weeks after we opened Brownie’s Dog Boutique… Continue reading A few ghost stories: Brownie died on Halloween

The most popular photo of Brownie the Town Dog of Daytona Beach

This is, by far, the most popular photo of Brownie. It appears to have been taken later in Brownie’s life, probably in the early 1950s, when Brownie started putting on weight from all the ice cream and steak that Beach Street merchants tended to feed him. Notes This photo is what I call the Brownie… Continue reading The most popular photo of Brownie the Town Dog of Daytona Beach
